The devil on your shoulder…

May 25th, 2005 · 3 Comments

I was chatting to a lovely new friend of mine yesterday, and the subject was creativity.  She has commenced her own business in the last year or so doing what she loves, and was commenting that the creativity that comes with that "cannot be switched off".

Wow!  Something to be said for doing what you love… what you are meant to be doing.

But there was a gremlin there, sitting on her shoulder, telling her she isnt creative, because she never has been.  Something she associates back with not being able to draw in school (not even a straight line:)… and so her inner voice is discounting this incredible creativity she has found.

And when I told her that I perceive her as very creative (and I have only known her a short few weeks…) her inner voice had a very hard time accepting that.  And accepting the worth of the stuff she creates.

What are you discounting because your little inner voice tells you you cannot do it, that you arent good enough, that you’ll never be able to…  what false beliefs do you have about your gifts?

Tell the devil on your shoulder to get a life, and just DO IT!

How strange! I’ve got a demon like that. I’m trying to find a good buttkicking name for her. You know a good put-down kind of name. One that allows me to say yes I know that voice is my demon in the corner so just SHUT UP. All in one wonderful name. I’m sure it’ll come to me when i give myself enough time to be creative!
    Any suggestions ladies?
I’d actually prefer it if it wasn’t necessarily lady-like cos she ain’t no lady this demon!!
    Thanks for the heads-up Karen

The title of this post made me think of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street band’s “Devil in a Blue Dress” but this isn’t what you were getting at. His was something that entranced and tempted him rather althought she was also distracting.

The devil on the shoulder also reminded me of the old Bugs Bunny cartoons and in particular when Sylvester or Daffy Duck had an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other both whispering or yelling in each ear. They were always fighting. Now some would see this as balance. The challenge to us all is to listen to the angel at least twice as much as we listen to the devil.

Chris, as for your devil’s name I also thought back to childhood TV days and thought Endora might by a good name (particularly with the movie version of Bewitched hitting the big screen soon). Nasty, witty, and always up for making things go awry.

Leah, I too thought of the devil from those old Warner Bros cartoons… and the angel on the other shoulder providing the ‘good’ advice ;-)

Chris, I like the thought of Endora for YOUR she-devil… or the other thought I had was of that girl in school (there was ALWAYS one, wasnt there??) who you ‘just couldnt stand’ (said through gritted teeth). The one where you would turn around and walk the opposite way so as not to have to pass her in the corridor… can you remember what HER name was? She’d be easy to tell to get lost, wouldnt she?
