Doing nothing isnt lazy

June 7th, 2005 · 1 Comment

You have to allow a certain amount of time in which you are doing nothing in
order to have things occur to you, to let your mind think.
   Mortimer Adler

When was the last time you did nothing?  As women who do too much, we tend to view ‘doing nothing’ as wasteful, lazy and unproductive.

But this thinking time, time when you are not occupying yourself with everything else you have to do, can be very, very productive.

Sometimes doing nothing but thinking can be the very best use of your time.

What are your thoughts on this?  Why not try a little ‘doing nothing’ time – even just 10 minutes today…  what have you got to loose?

I used to feel so guilty having 2 minutes on the couch doing nothing when I first was married and then had Eli. Not anymore!!! When Eli was about 3 and a half, almost a year ago, I finally gave myself ‘permission’ that after the bedtime routine and the closing of the kitchen (!) I would have time to myself doing nothing and not feel as though I should be somewhere doing something. It’s lovely, and I look forward to it, whether it’s for ten minutes, or maybe a bit longer…(!) And I think it is important to recognise that there is a moment in the day to be quiet and simply be.
